Sharp Drop in World Molasses Output Fails to Spur Prices

Molasses prices around the world fail to be inspired by the sharp drop in world production forecast for 2018/19.  In the Far East, fob prices are currently in the low to mid-USD90 per tonne only little changed from the depressed levels seen 12 months earlier. In Russia values were around USD80 on an exw basis and in the EU prices hover around EUR135-145 depending on the location.

EU Ethanol Industry Anti-Dumping Duty on US Imports

For a many years the EU ethanol industry has been protected from competition from US distillers. Before the anti-dumping (AD) duty on US product came into force in early 2013, this origin was the by far the largest among all suppliers to the EU market. In 2011, imports from the US hit an all-time high of 1.4 bln litres, most of which in the form of high ethanol blends (E-90 or ‘Alcoline’) which entered the Union at nominal tariffs only. Currently US ethanol has to pay a tariff of EUR151 per m³ of which EUR49 forms the AD duty.
